In April, Claremont got a humbling introduction to the CRVBL at the hands of the defending champion Chester Pirates with a 15-3 defeat. Six weeks later, both teams returned to Barnes Park for a rematch. Claremont was able to avenge the earlier loss behind timely hitting, key defensive plays, and outstanding pitching.
Mike Wells is the Claremont ace and he held the offensive juggernaut in check for 8 innings, allowing only 5 hits and one run. John Grainger knocked in the first run of the game with single in the first, and then he helped stop a rally by throwing out a would be thief at third in the fifth inning and picking off a Pirate runner at second base in the seventh.
The Cardinals had trouble with Pirate starter Doug Roberts who fanned 9 in 5 innings of work. But when the Cardinals hit, they strung together multiple hits to produce runs. Bob Myers had a pair of hits, as the rest of the lineup stayed focused and manufactured some runs.
Final score Claremont 6, Chester 1. After the Memorial Day Break, Claremont will host the Putney Fossils. Claremont will be looking to even that series after Putney won the first meeting 8-6.
